Both Chuck and Estella Acosta’s educational careers spanned over 35 years. Chuck worked as a bilingual education consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Estella was a life-long educator with a passion for bilingual education beginning her career as an elementary teacher which led her to her role as the director of English Learner Programs for the Orange County Department of Education. They both served on many local, county and state educational committees, and through their work and vision, they influenced many educators and state leaders. Chuck was also one of the co-founders of the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE). With their vision, tenacity, and true belief in the power of bilingual education, the Acosta’s knew that with the growing number of English learners in California, an organization such as CABE would be a powerful source of grass-roots advocacy and the premier source of professional learning for teachers, administrators, para-educators, and parents.
The California Association for Bilingual Education’s vision “Multiliteracy, Multicultural Competency, and Educational Equity for All” exemplifies the commitment to promoting multilingual education and quality educational experiences for all students in California. In support of the CABE vision, CABE’s mission is to implement priorities, initiatives and services, such as increasing the number of dual language programs and building a multilingual teacher force across the state, which will provide highly effective learning environments promoting multiliteracy, and supporting English learners and all diverse populations to graduate college, career, and globally prepared to live their lives to their fullest potential.
