In this full-day institute, you will learn about the content of the new English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC), including how it compares and contrasts to the old California English Language Development Test (CELDT). You will have the opportunity to unpack the ELPAC tasks and learn which English Language Development (ELD) standards are assessed in each ELPAC task at each grade level. In addition, we will be sharing how the ELPAC is linked to the CCSS mathematics and NGSS science and engineering practices. We will analyze the ELPAC Performance Level Descriptors and you will get the chance to consider their potential link to the ELD Proficiency Level Descriptors. We will also explore the implications for classroom instruction and how administrators and instructional coaches can support teachers in structuring for student interaction and integrating ELPAC-like tasks in their classroom instruction. Institute handouts will be provided to allow you the opportunity to lead a similar presentation in your district or at your site.

Based on the highly-regarded research study, “Reparable Harm,” (2010), we will collaboratively model, discuss, and share proven Long-Term English Learner program models, instructional strategies, and considerations for raising Long-Term English Learners’ achievement and English proficiency in middle and high school. We will share robust, proven, and practical strategies to increase Long-Term English Learners’ engagement, raise their academic achievement, increase their proficiency in English, and reduce passivity, utilizing their home language and culture and crafting content and language objectives to support student accountability. Spectacularly successful case studies cited in the Long-Term English Learner research will also be shared.

In this full-day institute, you will examine and explore Integrated English Language Development (ELD) instruction at the secondary level using resources that correlate to the CCSS math, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), ELD standards, and the tasks on the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC). We will work with engaging lesson resources in secondary math and science that have unique approaches to content-specific concepts from the CCSS and NGSS, as well as provide support for the implementation of Integrated ELD, to build students’ literacy and vocabulary skills in English and address the ELD standards, the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and the Science and Engineering Practices, especially those that are linked to the tasks in the new ELPAC assessment. We will work together using a template for planning Integrated ELD in math and science instruction as well as embedding ELPAC-like tasks in your instruction.
